    hej hej på engelska :)

    Hej Hej

I am an American living in Stockholm. I can speak a bit of Swedish, but my written Swedish has lots of room for growth!
I was diagnosed with PCOS in 1998 and have been trying to have a baby for well over a year. I am quite active on other PCOS sites, but this is the first time I have found
something in Sweden and I am thrilled to have found you! Here's hoping I find more relative information here, since obviously treatment is different around the world.

I have seen several doctors since moving to Sweden and the first 2 didn't want to do anything about PCOS aside from give me birth control pills (which doesn't help if you are trying to have a baby!). I had a very hard time finding a doctor who would give me metformin, but finally I found one. I have tried pergotime 3 times, but have not ovulated even once. Next month I am supposed to start gonal-f. I am on a waiting list for IVF, but they said it is over 18 months wait at this point.

I have been thinking about trying acupuncture, but honestly I am open to ANYTHING that will bring us a baby. Is there anyone in Stockholm who doesn't mind writing in English?
I could use some Swedish PCOS girls around me ;) My friends are great, but it's nice to have people around that understand PCOS...

    Tack!

    Hi!

I don´t mind either (writing in english) and I have PCOS. I tried for a baby with my ex-boyfriend witohout success. I tried both pergotime and puregon (shots similar to Gonal-f). Nothing work, I ovulated once we think, the didn´t do any tests but I did get my period at the time I was suppose to...

We will start tryig for a baby, me and my new love, soon and will probably use pergotime a few times and then do ivf at a private clinic. The wait in stockholm is terrible so we´ll pay for it and skip the wait...

Nice to see yo btw and welcome to familjeliv:)

    Hi and welcome to Familjeliv!

I have PCO and Pergotime worked for me, but only when I take double dose. Have you tried that? I always started whit singel dose for a couple of months, but I did not ovulate until I started taking double dose.

I hope you will find many friends here with similar problems!

    Hi!
I dont mind writing in english either. But I dont have PCO, but we problems to get pregnant (nobody knows why).

About IVF...maybe you can try somewhere else in Sweden and see if the waiting time are shorter. There is a clinic both in Uppsala (Linnekliniken) and Falun, and many other places to... so if you want to go there private and not wait för Landstinget to pay, I think the waiting could be shorter!?

Im sorry my English is not to good (and my 18 years old son is not around right now, he is good att English ) I have PCO/S and lives in Stockholmarea. Im also a member of the Swedish  associason  board (sorry ,about spelling )of PCO/S. www.pco-s.com .You can call us if you like, it´s easyer to speak english.

I´m sorry to say it´s common in Sweden that doctors knows less about PCO/S. Doctors seems to be "more up to date" in USA.

In Stockholm you got good doctors at . It´s private and  higher taxes  (more expensive) than landstinget.

Thanks so much for all of the replies :) I really appreciate it!
I know writing in English may not be the easiest for all of you, but you came across perfectly :)

I have tried a triple dose of Pergotime and still didn't ovulate. I had several ultrasounds at my doctor, but I never had a large enough follicle to even trigger.

Can someone explain to me how it generally works with Gonal-F in Sweden? How many days do I do it? Does the doctor take blood often? How about ultrasounds? I talk to a lot of women in the USA, but it seems so different. The doctors there are a bit more involved it seems.

Does anyone know what the total cost of IVF is when it's public vs. private? I wonder if it's even worth waiting another year or if my husband and I should just go private.

Also, I wonder if anyone has found a doctor in Stockholm that is good with PCOS? I have been to 3 so far and think I have finally found one that I like.

    tack!!

Hi, I have checked the public vs private IVF prices in southern sweden. I guess it's not that much difference up there in Stockholm. Well, with public IVF you basically don't have to pay anything for the treatment itself, just some visiting fee. But of course you will have to wait for your turn. 18 months sounds a terribly long time. Here in the south the waiting time is only about two months.
With private IVF it costs from 35000 to 40000. They usually have some package price, like 38000 for tre tries. The price can also vary depending om exactly what kind of treatment you need. You can usually find this kind of information at some private clinic's webpage.
Last but not least, good luck! I have a friend who suffers from the same problem.

    Hi!

I don't live in Stockholm, but with the Internet noone is so far away.

I've got PCO and the best help I have gotten from my private doctor, he understood the problem and my feelings. Just now I'm only eating Metformin and trying to lose at least 15kg before next step, so I cant anyting about Gonal F...I think my body is working better when I lose weight, and I have been more hopeful of the possibility for me also to have a baby!

    I wish you goog luck!

    Hi!

I don't mind writing in English either.
I've been diagnosed with PCOS and later on also thyroid. (Irregular/lacking period). Like you I have also tried pergotime 3 times, but didn't ovulate. Next step was IVF. Tried it twice but didn't respond well to that either, confusingly to the doctors.

I hope you'll respond better than I, but my doctors couldn't/ still can't really figure out why I didn't respond. Got the suggestion from them to try acupuncture (TCM). Since April when I started the treatment I've menstruated twice. Acupuncture may be worth trying out while waiting for IVF!? It's said to make a difference for women with hormone disorders like PCOS.

There is a doctor in Uppsala, at a clinic called Carl von Linne, that is very well known with PCO and has doe a lot of research in the area, since 1979 I think. If you do´nt mind travveling the extra 40 minutes by train I can really recomend him. His name is Dr Jan Holte.

When it comes tom Gonal-f I´m not so sure ´cas I´ve only used Puregon but I think they are similiar. I took shots every night for a few days and then went to the clinic to see (ultrasounds) how or even if my eggs were developing as they should. I sometimes needed to increase my doses and then wet back a few days later for another ultrasound. Then when the egg as at the right size (approx. 20 mm or larger) the doctor gave me another shot (ovitrelle) to help the egg losen from my ovaries. I did not take any bloodtests but I did ultrasounds at least once a week. It took me over thre weeks the forts time to ovulate but the next time they knew what the perfect dose for me was and I didn´t need to wait as long.

I hope I made any sense to you, as someone said it´s easier to express myself in spoken english than in written....

  • Emma 84

    Hi!

I have used Gonal-F. I took one shot once a day in 18 days. Then when my eggs was in the right size i get on shot who helpt the egg losen from ovaries. I get to my doctor once a week to do ultrasounds and the last week i was there 2 times. That was the only test i done because i have alredy done so many before (blood). Then we have to do a hmm dont know the word but inseminering. Did you understand that or maybe someone else know the word in english. Well all this helpt us to get a baby and she is now 6 soon 7 months.

Good luck and if you want to know more just ask. Sorry for the bad english.

If you want to get help in the public care, there is only one hospital in Stockholm who work with it, it´s  at Karolinska universitetsjukhsuet ,Huddinge at  the IVF -clinic/unit named K59, look att (also a bit  in English ) The doctors in  public care will give two  chanses to  conseve/get pregnent at IVF unit K 59.

To get an first apointment it can take up to one year, or longer.  The price is 900 kr in 12 mounth´s to each of you. (For exampel a man can need a spemtest). If you got "uppehållstillstånd" or  is a "member of Sweden", in ather cases it will be more exensive.  You ned an "remiss" from a doctor, an gynecolist (gynekolog).  A privet doctor-consultaition  can help you to get in to the public system faster.

I´m sorry about my english wokabulary end spelling. My son is still away (until sunday) so I can not ask him to help me.

Hi, and welcome! I have PCO-s just like you, although Pergotime sort of worked for me. Gave me plenty of cysts instead of a baby, so the next step is surgery and then probably IVF. I'm not too sure how Gonal-f works, haven't tried it myself. However, I have heard that some doctors here aren't too keen on prescribing injections to women with PCO, since we are very easy to over stimulate (and the injections are a bit harder to monitor). Then again, some doctors have no problem with it what so ever. I'm from Stockholm originally, but I live in Skåne now. Down here the waiting list for IVF is actually not that bad. They call you for a first meeting within 3 months, after that I'm pretty sure it doesn't take too long to get started. But if you're willing to go to a private clinic, Falun's is said to be the best. I have heard they have some kind of guarantee there as well. Might be worth looking into. I don't have the financial means to go privately, so I have to wait for my "free" IVFs, but after that I would seriously rather go to Falun than anywhere else. Besides, a lot of people have complained about the bad service and reception at Huddinge Hospital. That, added with the long waiting list doesn't make it a very attractive place to pick, unless you have no other options. Anyways, best of luck, and if you feel like it you can always inbox me. Planning on moving back to Stockholm as soon as my three free IVFs are used.

  • americantjej

falun huh? I will have to look into that. I did see their webpage at some point and noticed my doctor's name is on it for if you want to do your preexam in Stockholm. I am headed to my doctor on Tuesday to talk about Gonal-F, so I might ask him about Falun then.

Is it possible for Stockholm to send you to another city? It seems silly to have 18+ months wait in one city when another has 3!! I don't mind traveling! :)

Also, when they say "FREE IVF" is it really and truly free? What costs are associated with it? I rang Huddinge and the woman who answered had no idea. I thought that was quite strange since she is answering the phones in that department.

    Thanks :)
Hope everyone is having a nice weekend!

    Hello!
There is no free IVF in sweden.  At least you have to pay the price  up to "högkostndsbelopp" for public health care.  IT´s often 900 kr in a 12 mounth unit in Sweden.  I´t may be some difrence between " landstingen ".

I dont think "stockholmlandsting" likes to pay an IVF to you in another town/city, if  you not are in a medicial studie  who ther doctors are doing. You can ask att "beställarkontor vård"  to get the rules,  the telephonenumber  you find at  www.slll.se.

  • Selenea

It *is* silly to have different rules in the same country, but unfortunately it's how it is. I don't know if you can get landstinget to pay for IVF in another city, but if you go privately you can go anywhere you like. Your doctor probably knows more of how it works where you are.

And LiselottePCOS is absolutely right, it's not free per sé. It's paid by other people's (as well as our own) taxes, and we still have to pay to a certain limit, like she said. But 900 kr / year is NOTHING compared to maybe 25 000 per ET. Then, added to that, you have to pay your own medicine (so the injections and nose spray, if you use that). But then you go by Apoteket's price limit, which is a step by step thing. So at the end, you don't have to pay the full price anyway. I think you can learn more about it at www.apoteket.se .

I don't think the same rules apply if you're not a Swedish citizen, but if you are, it shouldn't cost much more than that.

thanks again girls. i will take a look at the websites :)
