"Empirical and theoretical evidence combined continues to support current recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics11 that babies, most especially breastfed babies, need to be fed on cue and should be allowed to set their own routine, rather than placed on a predetermined schedule. It is our further conclusion that practices which interfere with babies' cuings have been responsible for low weight gains, failure to thrive, milk supply failure, involuntary early weaning, and possibly even some cases of colic, as well as infant regression and depression due to lack of parental responsiveness to baby's frantic cues. Maternal milk production and infant intake are influenced by many factors, including frequency of feeding during the establishment of lactation, maternal milk storage capacity, infant stomach capacity, milk fat content, and the degree of breast emptying at any given feeding. Thus the evidence is very strong that arbitrary scheduling of breastfed infant feedings is inadvisable for any mother who desires to breastfeed successfully."

"Feed more often. One reason that the !Kung San spend so much time holding their babies is that they feed them almost continuously, approximately four times per hour, four minutes per feeding. Researchers speculate that this approach to feeding may be partly responsible for the reduced crying of the !Kung San infants. Even if continuous feeding does not fit into your schedule, adding a few extra sessions per day may still help. And don't worry that you're feeding the baby too often. Doctors say a normal schedule can include frequent feedings."

"Feed your baby. If you think your baby may be hungry, try a feeding. Hold your baby as upright as possible, and burp your baby often. Sometimes more frequent ? but smaller ? feedings are helpful. If you're breast-feeding, it may help to empty one breast completely before switching sides. This will give your baby more hindmilk, which is richer and potentially more satisfying than the foremilk present at the beginning of a feeding."

"Do not time feedings. Mothers all over the world have breastfed babies successfully without being able to tell time. Breastfeeding problems are greatest in societies where everyone has a watch and least where no one has a watch."

"Feed more often. Babies who ingest less food more often have smoother digestive processes"
