    Mat pa forksolan

Hi there, I apologise for the mail being in English, but my Swedish is not good enough as yet!  Our kids have been placed in a nursery in quite far away from our home,  until they start at a closer one in August.

Although the nursery seems lovely, I am really concerned about the food toddlers & preschoolers are given here.

Every lunch they have been given so far, while I am doing the 'in-skoling' has been made with processed meat.  No fresh meat seems to be used.  (in other words they only seem to get chicken nuggets - for a 1.5 year old! - valukorv, reconstituted chicken, etc.

It really concerns me that children of such a young age are being given this type of junk meat on a daily basis.  This nursery has it's own kitchen.

Do all nurseries serve only processed meat? If so what are my options?  Can we pack lunch for our kids?

     with thanks

    Lynn

Processed food doesn't mean bad food. Do you think minced meat is bad too or is it just bad if it is stuffed into a sausauge?
    Hi Lena

Processed meat (where I come from) means meat that  the meat is preserved by smoking, curing, salting or adding chemicals - this type of meat GREATLY increases the risk of stomach cancer.  Ham, bologna, hot dogs all fall into this category.

Also, reconstituted meat - such as all the leftover chicken/meat bits that are then put in a mixer & 'pressed' into a meat shape also have chemicals etc added/used in the process.

Neither of these types of meat are suitable for toddlers & preschool children on a regular basis.

Here we have alot of sausages and other things with very little chemicals in them. Falukorv is a sausauge with fairly much meat and nuggets is usually done with whole parts of chicken.

Before EU Sweden had harder restrictions for food than most other countries in europe and that reflects in the common foods. They are usually low on nitrates and other chemicals.

Thanks Lena, in the London dagis our son was at before we moved here they served real pieces of meat (no compressed/reconstituted meat), no junk food like hotdogs, etc either - as I HATE what the non-organic slaugherhouses do to their meat/animals I try to buy only organic food meat for meals at home - so I guess I'm a little disappointed is all.
