Designer Cathy Whitlock gives tips on how to incorporate Swedish Country style into your home:
Furnishings are light in color to offset the dark months in Sweden. Swedish design has clean lines to create a simple, understated look. Hang a wreath worn by a bride or bridesmaid from a Swedish wedding on a bedpost . Use a daybed as a sofa by day and bed at night. European style pillows complement the back with pale blue pillows as accents (
figure A). Hang mosquito netting or fabric as a half canopy (corona style) above a bed for softness with plates on the wall to accent the netting. Painted pieces are a wonderful alternative to dark woods (
figure B) in a guest room, sunroom or child's bedroom. Periwinkle and white plaid fabric is popular in this style. Try using stronger fabric colors such as red, subdued yellow or pink. Don't be afraid to mix and match colors and patterns--just keep everything in the same color family. Swedish style covers the entire range of white available. There are many different shades so just choose one you like. Floors should be kept light when using this look. Bleached pine, rag and sisal rugs all work to enhance the style.
