Dear Friends,
This has been a rough week. Last Wednesday, a badly flawed NIH study of 14 children on a gluten- and casein-free diet led to headlines with the conclusion that special diets for autism are ineffective. As you know, this flies in the face of thousands of case studies and multiple US and European studies in support of this intervention. Not to mention our own experience.
We want the US medical authorities to understand that the risk of harm from carefully monitored special diets is far smaller than the risk of harm from dismissing or discouraging this intervention. I have been working with autism media folks and DAN doctors to put together a strategy for combating the spread of this misleading information.
Our first step is making sure that the science supporting the diet is easily available, so I have spent the last couple of days compiling abstracts on a new website:
www.facebook.com/l/6712b;www.autismbiomed.com.
Next, I am putting together a comprehensive report with details about the NIH study, to be posted shortly in autism newsletters and websites. I will be sure to post a copy here.
Finally, Dr. Jaquelyn McCandless and I have sponsored two petitions that we plan to present to the NIH - one from caregivers and one from medical professionals. The site is
www.facebook.com/l/6712b;www.thepetitionsite.com/1/autism-diet-support and signing just takes a minute. When we have collected 5000 signatures, I will make sure this story gets lots of media attention.
You can sign anonymously, but I urge you to at least use your first name, and leave a brief comment with your signature. And please, pass this letter along to other parents, as well as to your child's teachers, therapists, and other caregivers who support the autism-diet connection.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Karyn Seroussi
